When Gov. Paul LePage takes office in January, he will face a budget gap of about $1 billion. This presents a tremendous challenge to him and the new Legislature, which is now controlled by the new governor’s party. It also presents an opportunity for

Republicans.

As the budget is crafted, what three big moves can the new state government make to reduce the tax burden and improve the regulatory climate, as the

GOP has said it wants to do? Or should it merely focus on balancing the budget, and then make bigger changes later in the session?
