BREWER, Maine — A local man was arrested Monday afternoon after a brief standoff with police on Blake Street.

Norris Martin, 59, was charged with violating a protection order and taken to Penobscot County Jail, Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said.

As of Monday evening, Martin was still at the jail, where he was being held on $60 bail, a jail official said.

Though Moffitt said he could not discuss the details surrounding the incident, he did say that the trouble began about 1:25 p.m. while police were conducting an investigation into whether Martin had violated a protection order by having contact with a protected person.

“Basically, he wouldn’t come out of his house and made some threatening statements,” Moffitt said.

As a precaution, Brewer police closed Blake Street to traffic until Martin was in custody.

Moffitt said the incident came to a peaceful end about half an hour after it began when Police Chief Perry Antone, who knew Martin, convinced him during a telephone conversation to cooperate with police.

No one was injured during the incident, Moffitt said.
