COLUMBIA FALLS – Stanley Foss Sr., 89, died Nov. 5, 2010, at a Jonesport health care facility. He was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Columbia Falls, the third child of Clayton and Harriet Foss. He attended Columbia Falls schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 9, Machias. For several years he worked at Pineo Lumber Co., where his wife, Emma, was a co-owner. In addition, he worked with his brother, Royce, as a self-employed carpenter. Stanley had a notable work ethic, taking great pride in his work. Even into his 80s, he grew large vegetable gardens, as well as blueberries and loved to share his harvest with family and friends. He was a card shark and enjoyed many an evening playing cards with company. Until recently, Stanley had the gift of good health and had been Emma’s primary caregiver. Stanley was married to Emma (Pineo) for 66 years, until her death in 2007. He is survived by two sons, Stanley Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, and Charles of Columbia Falls; a daughter, Ramona Phinney and her husband, Billy, of Milbridge; nine grandchildren, Robert, Randy, Rickey and Rodney Foss, Rebecca Brooks, Renee McGuire, Rhonda Norton, Nicole Shaw and Chris Phinney; 13 great-grandchildren, Dustin, Ryan, Eric, Courtney, Timothy, Nicholas, Nevan, Mackenzie, Danika, Logan, Marin, Colin and Emma; brothers, Clayton Jr. and Royce; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Haley; and five sisters, Lillian, Marjorie, Marion, Kathleen and Norma. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at Mailey Hill Cemetery, Columbia.
