FALMOUTH — The Yarmouth Clippers had too much wind in their sails for Ellsworth Saturday as Luke Pierce scored two goals to power the Western Maine champions to a 5-0 boys soccer victory over the Eastern Maine champion Eagles in the Class B state championship match at Falmouth High School.

Yarmouth wasted no time getting on the board as Campbell Belisle Haley headed in a Ryan Maguire corner kick 13:30 into the match.

From there, the Clippers used their speed and skill to control the game and they played a smart possession game by making extra passes on the artificial turf.

Yarmouth put the game away with two goals less than 40 seconds apart late in the first half, with Eamon Costello tapping home a rebound from Haley with 3:56 to go, while Pierce scored his first goal 37 seconds later.

Pierce and Sam Torres scored second-half goals for the Clippers, with Haley and Cotter Jackson picking up assists.

Ellsworth, which finishes 17-1, struggled to generate any attacks against the skilled, fast Clippers, and coach Brian Higgins’ club lost sophomore midfielder Josh Bean to an injury early in the match.

Jordan Carter had 11 saves on 26 shots for Ellsworth while Chris Knaub saved two out of three for Yarmouth, which finished at 17-0-1.
