STACYVILLE, Maine — Maine State Police are appealing to the public for help in identifying a man whose decomposing body was found by hunters in the woods off Route 11 on Thursday.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, announced news of the discovery in the northern Penobscot County town Friday.

According to McCausland, deer hunters found the body in the woods about a mile from the road. Detectives and game wardens, in concert with the state medical examiner’s office, removed the remains Friday afternoon.

An autopsy is planned for Monday.

Police think the man may have died sometime in the past two months and they are reviewing missing persons reports, according to McCausland.

The dead man is described as middle-aged. A height and weight estimate will be determined after the autopsy. He was wearing a blue and white knit cap with the name “Chris” marked inside, a blue and white plaid button-down shirt, khaki pants, white New Balance sneakers, size 10, and a brown jacket.

A black, nylon soft briefcase was found near the body. The briefcase contained additional clothing, McCausland said Friday.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Maine State Police in Houlton at 532-5400.
