CARIBOU, Maine — Two Aroostook County men and their alleged Florida-based drug supplier were three of 70 people indicted by the Aroostook County grand jury Friday.

Aroostook County District Attorney Neale Adams, who was overseeing his last grand jury, released the indictments Friday afternoon. Adams, who has served the maximum allowed five terms as district attorney, will step down at the end of the year. His successor, Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney Todd Collins, will assume the post in January. Collins easily beat out challengers Patrick Gordon of Houlton and John Pluto of Hamlin during the June primaries to win the position.

Robert Merriam, 50, and Jason Parsons, 32, both of Presque Isle, and 23-year-old Joseph Bolda of South Daytona, Fla., were arrested late last month by the County contingent of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. Merriam was indicted on two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs. Parsons and Bolda each were indicted on one count of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, namely oxycodone.

Darrell Crandall, the MDEA division commander, said that agents began looking into reports several months ago of Merriam receiving large quantities of prescription painkillers from Florida and selling them.

Postal records were found that showed packages coming from Florida to Presque Isle. On Oct. 6, a package containing 750 oxycodone tablets was intercepted en route to Presque Isle. The retail street value of the drugs is $30,000, according to MDEA.

At the same time, agents intercepted a package destined for Bolda, which contained $4,600, Crandall said. The investigation revealed that more than 20 similar deliveries of drugs and money occurred between April and October of this year, and the three subsequently were arrested.

Adams acknowledged Friday that many of the 70 indictments resulted from the activity of MDEA. He added that this year’s total indictments are up approximately 15 percent over last year.
