Belfast police looking for knife-wielding suspect

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — Police said Thursday that they would like the public’s help in locating a man suspected of cutting another man with a pocketknife last week.

A man with a shallow cut on his arm came to Waldo County General Hospital on Friday morning for treatment. He told medical staff that he had been walking the night before on Washington Street when a man came toward him who appeared to be intoxicated, according to Detective Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department.

That man looked Hispanic and had a tattoo of two black teardrops underneath his right eye, Cunningham said.

When the tattooed man reportedly made a derogatory comment to the other man, the two “exchanged words,” the detective said.

“He pulled out a pocketknife and got a cut in,” Cunningham said.

But the alleged victim told police that he managed to punch the tattooed man a couple of times, including a jab to the eye.

Police are investigating the incident and are looking for a Hispanic man with two tattooed teardrops under one eye, who also is likely to have a black eye, Cunningham said.

If anyone has information about the man’s identity and whereabouts, they can report it to police anonymously, he said.

To report information, call the Belfast Police Department at 338-5255.
