GREENVILLE, Maine — Scammers are hitting the Moosehead Lake region hard, informing residents through the mail, telephone and e-mails that they have won several million dollars, police say.
To claim the money, residents are told they must forward several hundred dollars to pay off taxes from sweepstakes, according to Greenville Police Chief Jeff Pomerleau.
Despite the public warnings to disregard these notifications, people still are falling prey, as in the case of an elderly Greenville man, Pomerleau said Thursday.
Pomerleau said the local man, who is very trusting, recently forwarded a couple of thousand dollars to collect his million-dollar winnings. He then had second thoughts and mentioned it to Pomerleau.
There is little to no hope of recovering the funds, Pomerleau said Thursday, since the scammers most likely live in foreign countries.
“If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably not true,” Pomerleau said. People should be extremely cautious of such notices, he said.
