Kelly Newton of the University of Maine has been named the America East Field Hockey Player of the Year. She is the first Black Bear to achieve such recognition.

The junior from Vancouver, British Columbia, also was a unanimous all-conference, first-team selection and was among six Black Bears to earn recognition from league coaches.

Stephanie Gardiner of UMaine joins Newton on the All-AE first team, while Maire Dineen, Jocelyn Mitchell and Brittany Fleck earned second-team honors. Alexa Binnendijk was chosen for the All-Rookie squad.

All winners were selected by a vote of the league’s six head coaches.

Coach Josette Babineau’s fourth-seeded Bears (13-5) are preparing for Friday’s 3 p.m. America East semifinal game at No. 1 New Hampshire (13-6).

Newton took home the top offensive player award after leading America East with 14 goals, including four game-winners. The three-time, first-team pick is two points shy of UMaine’s single-season scoring record with 43 points and already owns the program’s career scoring title.

Gardiner, a junior center midfielder who was a two-time, second-team choice, tallied 13 goals and seven assists after moving back from the front line this season. She ranked third in the league in points and points per game (1.83).

Dineen, a senior captain, played back on the Bears’ defense. She takes a second straight second-team award after posting a goal and five assists.

Mitchell, a junior forward, set a career high with 34 points (15 goals, 4 assists) to make the second team for the second straight season. She ranked second in America East in points, points per game, goal and goals per game and scored four game-winners.

Fleck, a junior goalkeeper, made the second team after posting three regular-season shutouts for UMaine. Fleck had a 13-4 record and ranks fifth in the nation with an .814 save percentage.

Binnendijk, a freshman midfielder, started all 18 games and posted a goal and seven assists.
