Man charged in MDI stabbing

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — A Tremont man has been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed another man last weekend.

Lt. Mike Miller of the Southwest Harbor Police Department said Wednesday that the incident occurred late Saturday night. Two men began fighting during a Halloween party at the American Legion Hall on Village Green Way, Miller said, and a third man intervened in an attempt to make them stop. One of the fighting men then allegedly used a pocketknife to stab the man who tried to intervene, the lieutenant said.

“[It was] nothing serious,” Miller said of the victim’s injuries. Immediately after the incident, the victim was treated for his injuries at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor and then released, according to the officer.

The names of people who are arrested are considered public information in Maine, but Miller declined to identify the man who was arrested in the case, saying that it still was under investigation. Miller confirmed the man is a Mount Desert Island resident and that he was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault.

According to information made available to the public at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office in Ellsworth, the man charged in the incident is Harry Harland Beers III, 46, of Tremont.
