LEWISTON, Maine  — A mysterious website that took aim at Maine independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler has apparently been deactivated.

Cutler’s campaign has asked the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to investigate the website, called The Cutler Files, whose creator has remained anonymous.

The campaign contends the website contains defamatory and false statements. It has asked the commission to determine if the site’s required to comply with state campaign finance laws, which would reveal the site’s originators.

Over the weekend, the website could no longer be found on the Internet.<

Cutler’s campaign manager, Ted O’Meara, told the Sun Journal of Lewiston he was glad to see the website had been deactivated, but would still like to know who was behind it.
