SWAN’S ISLAND, Maine — A resident of this island in Hancock County suffered serious burns to his face Saturday when a paint canister exploded.

Swan’s Island Fire Chief Robert Gardner said Norman Burns was lucky to come away with only burns.

The accident happened between 1 and 2 p.m. on a wharf near Burns’ home on Swan’s Island, a small, sparsely populated isle southwest of Mount Desert Island, accessible by ferry, private vessel or aircraft.

Gardner said the paint can was being heated on a stove when it exploded. It wasn’t clear whether the man was heating the pressurized can on purpose or by accident.

Burns, who Gardner said was in his 50s or 60s, was taken by ambulance from his home to a waiting LifeFlight helicopter that took him to a hospital in Portland.

The fire chief said Sunday afternoon that Burns was still in the hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening.
