Anti-Cutler ads rile Maine Democrats

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Some prominent Maine Democrats say mailings by their party targeting independent candidate for governor Eliot Cutler cross the line of decency and truthfulness.

Democratic state Sen. Dennis Damon of Trenton, a Cutler supporter, says in a letter to party leaders that mailings deliberately misrepresent Cutler’s work in China and stand on offshore oil drilling. Damon says the ads “reflect a new low in Maine Democratic political campaigns” and drive voters away from political parties.

Democratic National Committeeman Sam Spencer says he too is disturbed by the mailings, which he says smear Cutler and make absurd claims. Spencer notes he is a close friend and godson to Cutler.

Arden Manning, manager of the Democrats’ coordinated campaign, said the mailings contain valid criticism and he stands by them.
