ORONO, Maine — A candlelight vigil will be conducted on the University of Maine campus Thursday for those who have been victims of bullying, including those who have committed suicide because of it.

The vigil, which will begin at 6 p.m., will take place on the mall in front of the Fogler Library, according to organizer Rebecca Hickman, a UMaine graduate student who is studying mental health with a concentration in substance abuse counseling.

Hickman said that in addition to candles and ribbons, the vigil will include music performed by Women with Wings, a moment of silence for those lost to suicide, remarks from those who have been victims of bullying and accounts of how they overcame it.

Among those participating will be representatives from UMaine’s Counseling Center, Wilde-Stein Alliance for Sexual Diversity and Safe Campus Project, Hickman said.
