LEWISTON, Maine — Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler captured the approval of the Lewiston Sun Journal on Tuesday morning, capping a string of endorsements by every major daily newspaper in the state.

In an editorial titled “Maine needs a statesman, not an antagonist,” the paper was critical of Republican candidate Paul LePage’s “bare-knuckle style and bully tactics” and said Democratic candidate Libby Mitchell “is too status quo.”

The editorial cited Cutler’s experience working for former Sen. Edmund Muskie and in the business arena. “His public service provides a strong background on environmental and energy issues, and his business background is distinguished in its geographic reach and diversity of development,” the editorial said.

Cutler has previously been endorsed by the opinion department of the Bangor Daily News; MaineToday Media, which owns the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel; the Times Record of Brunswick; and the Village Soup media network. The Journal Tribune, of Biddeford, endorsed Libby Mitchell last week.
