Knox man arrested after fleeing crash site

BROOKS, Maine — A Knox man was arrested and jailed this weekend after police said he fled from his crashed truck while his passenger had suffered serious injuries and was pinned inside the vehicle.

Brian C. Ginn, 53, apparently had passed a farm tractor on Route 7 in Brooks at 6:54 p.m. Saturday, but ended up pulling too far to the left, causing the left tires of his 1996 Ford pickup truck to go into the ditch.

The truck went into the culvert then became airborne, Keating said. A witness to the crash told police that the truck was in the air for quite a distance before hitting the ground and rolling over.

The driver allegedly left the vehicle on foot and was seen heading away from the site.

Meanwhile, passenger Marshall Lowe, no age or address available, was trapped in the truck. Brooks emergency responders had to extricate him from the vehicle, and he was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast for treatment. Lowe suffered serious injuries to his head, back and arms, according to Keating.

About 40 minutes after he arrived at the scene of the crash, Deputy Kevin Littlefield of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department searched the area for the missing driver, Keating said.

The deputy saw a man with bloody hands hiding in the woods near the road and confronted him about the accident.

The man was Ginn, who also had fresh swelling from an impact wound and “showed indications” of being involved in an accident, Keating said.

Littlefield arrested Ginn and took him to the hospital. Once he was medically cleared, he was taken to Waldo County Jail after being charged with operating under the influence of intoxicants, driving to endanger, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and displaying a fictitious inspection sticker.

Ginn was released from jail Sunday afternoon on $750 cash bail, according to a jail official.
