EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — Greylen Hale wants the East Millinocket hunters breakfast to become as much of a family tradition in the Katahdin region as hunting itself.
That, he said, is why he and more than a dozen volunteers hope to see a full house at the breakfast on Oct. 30.
“We do it because we like giving back to the community, and hunting is so popular around here. It is a tradition,” Hale said on Friday. “The breakfast is not always just for hunters either. It could be for people going to work; Gram and Gramp who want to come in and socialize; area contractors doing work around the area.
“It is just a good place to socialize, check out the Fire Department’s equipment and see what the town has to offer,” he added.
Tickets cost $6 for adults, $4 for children 15 and under. The event will run 5-8 a.m. at the public safety building. The public is invited.
All proceeds for the event will go to the purchase of smoke detectors and other fire safety devices and the teaching of fire prevention at local schools, said Hale, a town firefighter and emergency medical technician who is among several of the event’s organizers and volunteers.
Firefighters often go door-to-door to help residents ensure that their smoke detectors are working properly and to replace those that are not. The event in the past has benefited scholarships for young volunteer firefighters, Hale said.
The department also does yard sales to raise money for itself, Hale said.
Fresh eggs, pancakes, ham, toast, beans, coffee and fruit juices will be among the offerings, Hale said. He encouraged participants to bring a good appetite and a sense of humor, as the kidding among firefighters and their friends can get intense.
Raffle tickets will go for $1 apiece and the grand prize is a Harrison-Richardson 20-gauge shotgun. Second prize is a hand-held GPS unit good for hunting or other outdoor activities.
Anyone who wants to donate food or other items to the breakfast or volunteer to help it is encouraged to stop by the public safety building. Tickets also may be purchased in advance.
