AMITY, Maine — An Amity man who went out for an ATV ride Friday evening was found dead early Saturday after crashing the vehicle into trees.

Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said Saturday evening that Mark Howell, 47, of Amity was found dead around 8 a.m.

Turcotte said that a family member contacted authorities around 2 a.m. Saturday when Howell, who was alone, did not return from an ATV ride.

The Maine Warden Service began searching, according to Turcotte, and the search continued until Howell was located off Estabrook Road in Amity.

Howell, who was not wearing a helmet, had hit some trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details were available Sunday.

The accident remains under investigation, according to Turcotte.
