NEWRY, Maine — Maine’s Sunday River says its snowmaking system has enabled it to open some terrain, allowing it to stake a claim as the nation’s first ski resort to open this season.
Sunday River opened its black-diamond T2 trail at 3:30 p.m. Friday after 19 hours of continuous snowmaking. Spokeswoman Darcy Liberty said about 12 skiers, mostly employees, were waiting to make the run.
She said the trail would be open this weekend with a foot of snow and that skiers would have to pay $25 for the opportunity to say they skied Sunday River a week before Halloween.
Ski areas often seek bragging rights as first to open for the season. But it’s usually later in the season before they’re able to remain open seven days a week.
