BAR HARBOR — Ellsworth's Louie Luchini set a course record in winning the Mount Desert Island Marathon Sunday.
Luchini, a former Ellsworth High and Stanford running standout, eclipsed the previous record set by Bar Harbor's Judson Cake by 20 seconds. He finished the course in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 54 seconds, beating the 2005 record time of 2:32:14.
Leah Jabbour of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was the top female finisher with a time of 3:06:05, placing 21st overall.
Luchini is a Democratic candidate running for District 38 for the Maine House of Representatives.
Patrick Fournier of Rome placed second, over four seconds behind Luchini, with a time of 2:36:13. Last year's race winner, David Herr of Canaan, Vt., was third at 2:36:31. Mathew Frongillo of Bar Harbor and Kevin Rolfe of Hamburg finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Robert Gomez of Waldoboro was sixth and Justin Montgomery of Claremont, N.H., finished seventh.
Last year's runner-up, Erik McCarthy of Orono, placed eighth with a time of 2:44:09.
Joshua Shaffer of Cottage Grove, Wis., finished ninth for the second-straight year. Surry's Andy Beardsley was 10th.
Amanda Labelle of Dedham was the second-best finishing woman with a time of 3:06:35. South Portland's Kristine Guaraldo was third with Emily Gean of Canton, Mass., and Debbie Moreau of Lewiston rounding out the top five.
