SURRY, Maine — An Ellsworth teenager died in a single-car accident on Newbury Neck Road on Friday night.

According to Deputy Robert Morang of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Mark Quinlan, 18, was headed north on the road about three-quarters of a mile from the Morgan Bay Road intersection at about 9:15 p.m. Friday. He had just come out of a curve on the road when he lost control of his vehicle, which went off the right side of the road and struck several trees.

Quinlan died at the scene.

Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident, according to Morang. Quinlan was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The trees covered the 2010 Honda, which was not discovered until about 7 a.m. Saturday by a passer-by.

Morang was assisted at the scene by Lt. Patrick Kane and Detective Alan Brown, along with crews from the Ellsworth and Surry fire departments and County Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation.
