Four Maine schools lauded for nutrition

The Associated Press

TURNER, Maine — Four schools in Maine are being recognized for excellence in providing healthful environments for their students.

Turner Elementary, Turner Primary, Leeds Central and Greene Central schools were recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture during an awards ceremony Friday in Turner.

Those schools are the first in Maine to earn silver awards in the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge, a program that encourages schools to create healthful environments by promoting nutritional excellence and physical activity.

Officials say only 841 schools out of 101,000 eligible schools nationwide have achieved HealthierUS status.
