Mechanic Falls man who worked with kids faces sex charges

The Associated Press

AUBURN, Maine — Police in Mechanic Falls, Maine, have brought more than a half-dozen sex charges against a man who worked for more than 10 years with kids on the town’s Recreation Committee.

John “Jack” Callahan, who was arrested last week, is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $25,000 cash bail. Police Chief Jeffrey Goss declined to discuss details, citing an ongoing investigation.

Charges include two counts each of gross sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual abuse of a minor, as well as single counts of unlawful sexual touching, unlawful sexual contact and possession of child porn.

Town Manager John Hawley tells the Sun Journal newspaper that the 54-year-old Callahan passed a background check, which was run because of his volunteer work with children.
