Iconic Portland theater ready to reopen after fixes

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — An iconic Maine theater in Portland that has been shuttered for four years is ready to reopen after undergoing $1.5 million in renovations.

The 81-year-old State Theatre on Congress Street is expected to reopen Friday with a sold-out show by the group My Morning Jacket.

The theater has been closed since 2006.

The renovations have included new seats, paint, carpeting and lights and sound equipment.

The Portland Press Herald says the theater’s original architectural flourishes, including four faux balconies, giant banks of columns and sculpted scenes on each side of the stage, have been cleaned and repainted so they are more noticeable.
