Brogden lifts Mariners past Owls in OT

CASTINE — Junior Emily Brogden scored three minutes into overtime to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 1-0 women’s college soccer win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Wednesday.Lacey Jackson earned the shutout for the 4-7-1 Mariners while Taylor Ussery took the loss in goal for 8-3 UM-Presque Isle.

Colby 1, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, Sam Merriweather scored off a Annie Papadellis assist 24:30 into the first half to power Colby College of Waterville past the University of Southern Maine.

Jayde Bennett saved five of seven shots for 4-3-3 Colby.

Kat Rothe and Katie Cobb combined for four saves off 17 shots for the 4-10 Huskies.

Bates 3, UM-Farmington 0

At Lewiston, Bates College used three second-half goals to beat the University of Maine at Farmington.

Meredith Poore, Kara Stefaniak and Courtney Talcott scored for 5-4-1 Bates. Alix Vandeventer, Sam Alper and Jaimie Cappucci recorded assists. Anabel Schmelz made three saves off six shots.

McKell Barnes turned away 12 of 44 shots for the 5-7-1 Beavers.

Men’s soccer Maine Maritime 1, UMPI 0

At Castine, Ben Russell received a pass from Abdullah Alkhayyat and lofted the ball from the right edge of the penalty area into the corner over University of Maine at Presque Isle goalie Joshua Mackinnon to give Maine Maritime Academy its triumph.

Russell scored in the 38th minute.

Randy Bartlett made six saves on 18 shots for the 4-6-2 Mariners while Mackinnon made three saves on 12 shots for the 6-5 Owls.

Field hockey

St. Joseph’s 2, Salem State 1 (OT)

At Standish, Courtney Rague scored 1:26 into overtime to lift St. Joseph’s past Salem State.

Melanie Allen scored a first-half goal for the 9-3 Monks. Meaghan Johnson had six saves on 11 shots.

April Rossetti scored late in the second half for 4-6 Salem State. Jessica McKenna registered four saves on 11 shots.

Bowdoin 5, Colby 1

At Waterville, Elizabeth Clegg and Katie Herter each scored twice as Bowdoin College of Brunswick defeated Colby College.

Kassey Matoin also scored for 10-0 Bowdoin. Cathleen Smith, Emily French, Herter and Clegg each provided an assist. Emily Neilson and Kayla Lessard combined for three saves off eight shots.

Meryl Poulin scored with assists from Sarah Falkof and Caitlyn Lancaster in the second half for 4-6 Colby. Liz Fontaine saved 12 of 29 shots.

Bates 3, Southern Maine 0

At Lewiston, Lyndsay Beaton scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to trigger a three-goal flurry in the first half that gave Bates College its second win in its last three games.

Beaton deflected a Michelle Brady shot past USM goalie Rachel Lolley and, 3:41 later, Brady expanded the lead by banging home a rebound off a penalty corner. Laura Baran made it 3-0 off a Sema Kazarian pass.

Katie McEnroe made five saves on 12 shots for the 3-7 winners.

Lolley made one save before being relieved by Kayla Kennedy, who finished with nine saves for 5-10 USM.

Bates had 33 shots at goal.
