Police: Fatal Casco shooting during target practice was an accident

The Associated Press

CASCO, Maine — Maine state police say the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old man by a boy is being classified as an accident.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland said Wednesday that Richard Jacobson of Casco was shot in the back with a .22-caliber rifle while target shooting on Rattlesnake Mountain.

McCausland described the individual wielding the rifle as a “young boy” but declined to be any more specific. He said he didn’t want to “compound the tragedy.”

The Portland Press Herald says Jacobson was the father of two young boys.

The shooting happened Saturday at 4:15 p.m. McCausland says someone dialed 911 and that a 911 operator contacted the victim before he died at the scene. He declined to say how many people were participating in the target practice.
