PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a person reported to have jumped from a bridge in Portland, Maine.

Coast Guard Lt. Nick Barrow says a motorist dialed 911 Wednesday afternoon to report that a man wearing shorts went over the guard rail of the Route 1 bridge linking Portland and Falmouth.

He says a Coast Guard boat was on scene within five minutes, but there was no sign of anyone in the water.

He says the motorist who dialed 911 departed before the searchers arrived. printed on August 19, 2017
