BANGOR — Husson University will host two community walks this Saturday — one to benefit the American Heart Association and the other to provide college scholarships to children of fallen soldiers.
Registration for the Husson Run for the Children is scheduled for 8-9 a.m., with a 1-mile fun run starting at 9 a.m. and a 5K race beginning at 10 a.m.
A pre-walk ceremony for the 2010 Northeastern Maine Start! Heart Walk is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at O’Donnell Commons, and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. with participants walking a 1-, 2- or 4-mile route. The heart walk’s closing ceremonies and lunch are scheduled to occur at 11 a.m.
Cardiovascular disease — which includes heart disease and stroke — is the No. 1 killer of Maine men and women and the leading birth defect in the state, according to a press release about the heart walk.
“Hundreds of northeastern Maine residents will walk with families, friends, and co-workers,” it states. “Walkers will help lead a stronger, healthier life for themselves and their community while raising funds to support the American Heart Association’s lifesaving research, education and public health initiatives.”
The Run for the Children start and finish will be held adjacent to Newman Gymnasium. The run is co-sponsored by Husson University and the University of Maine’s ROTC program and will benefit scholarships issued through the Maine Infantry Foundation.
