Country star Kenny Chesney films video in Port Clyde

ROCKLAND, Maine — Country music singer Kenny Chesney was in Maine on Wednesday filming scenes for a music video for the song, “Seven Days” off his new album, “Hemingway’s Whiskey.”

Chesney arrived in Maine on Tuesday night and boarded the Captain Lee, a groundfishing boat from Port Clyde early Wednesday afternoon while it was docked in Rockland.

“I love Maine,” Chesney said before the boat headed out to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse to shoot scenes for the video.

More than a dozen crew members have been filming in the Port Clyde and Rockland areas for two days. Crewmembers said Wednesday was the last day of the film shoot in Maine.

The video’s producer, Don Lepore, said the song is about fall, the coast and lighthouses. He said the video’s debut “is a ways down the road.”

Members of Chesney’s team had driven to Port Clyde earlier this week to pick a boat for filming. They selected Justin Libby’s Captain Lee, a 50-foot groundfishing boat, complete with a hefty net hanging off the stern.

Libby, 30, of Port Clyde, drove his boat to a dock in Rockland on Wednesday to meet the crew after lunch. He said the call from the film team couldn’t have come at a better time. Libby is working on building a new net and is waiting for a critical piece to come in.

“I couldn’t go out [fishing] this week anyway,” he said as he stood on his boat Wednesday afternoon. “It came at the perfect time.”

Sarah Leiter of Rockland waited with Libby on his boat. She said Chesney’s appearance is a boost to the area.

“It really puts the spotlight on Rockland,” she said. “I think everyone is glad he is here.”

As Captain Lee took Chesney and his team off to the lighthouse, a mile off the coast of Rockland, Helen Bickford of Rockport stood on the dock watching. She said she is a big fan of the country music star and wanted to see him before he left.

“I think he has a good voice,” she said. “Plus, he is kind of cute.”

Another country star, Taylor Swift, shot a music video in the Kennebunk area earlier this summer. Her video, “Mine,” is already airing on country music television stations.
