3 plead not guilty to faking election documents

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Three people are pleading not guilty to charges they falsified documents while circulating nominating petitions for former Maine governor candidate John Richardson.

The Kennebec Journal in Augusta says two of them — 51-year-old Denise Altvater of Perry and 46-year-old William Moore of Brunswick — have requested jury trials. The third, 54-year-old Joseph Pickering of South Portland, faces a hearing on the charges.

The three are charged with unsworn falsification of documents while they were collecting $5 contributions in Richardson’s attempt to qualify for public campaign funding through Maine’s Clean Election Act. When the case came to light, Richardson dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination.
