There will be plenty of chances for local high school basketball players to hone their skills before the upcoming season at the Bangor Y this fall.
Former longtime high school basketball coach Bob Cimbollek, whose teams earned 446 victories in his 40 years of head coaching, will conduct preseason walk-in clinics for high school girls and boys the next four Fridays, while a 3-on-3 double-elimination tournament for both boys and girls squads will take place Nov. 20-21.
Other clinics include Columbus Day Shooting Competitions, which will feature foul shooting, 3-point shooting and hot-shot contests, along with a Veterans Day coaching clinic for coaches of all levels on Nov. 11.
"We just feel that we should try to offer more activities in the fall for kids who are just basketball players," Cimbollek said.
The preseason walk-in clinics, which are $5 for YMCA members and $10 for non-members, will take place 3-5 p.m. for boys and 5-7 for girls the next four weeks, with the emphasis focused on fundamentals.
"We'll be working on some things they don't know. We'll work on some shooting, defense, all basketball skills," Cimbollek said. "It's designed to cure their basketball ills. Mostly what happens is, kids just work on their strength, or don't work at all, they just shoot."
The Y will also feature its preseason league for local high school teams, which will start later this month.
Aside from the preseason league, the other four clinics will be making their debuts this fall.
The shooting contests are for middle and high school players, and will run 8:30-11 a.m. for middle school players and 2-5 p.m. for high school players. The fees are $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
The coaching clinic will provide coaches at all levels a chance to sit down with Cimbollek and pick his brain about coaching, as well as improve individual and team skills.
Times for these clinics, Nov. 11, are: 9-11 a.m., Session 1, developing individual skills; 11 a.m.-2 p.m., lunch; 2-4 p.m., Session 2, developing team skills and wrapping up with "Pick the Clinician's Brains" from 4-5 p.m.
Early registration is due by Nov. 4, and is just $25 while late registration will cost $35. Coaches at all levels, from YMCA up through AAU and high school, are welcome to attend.
The 3-on-3 tournament will be held Nov. 20, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for high school boys and Nov. 21, at the same times, for high school girls. Fees are $30 per team or $5 per player.
"We'll probably try to break them into groups, depending on grades," Cimbollek said.
