Top Eastern Maine golfers earn berths to state tourneys

The Brewer golf team has qualified for the state Class A championships later this month thanks to its performance at the KVAC Qualifier at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro on Tuesday.

The Witches’ Kyle Alexander was the top Class A individual with a 77, one stroke ahead of Cony of Augusta’s Kyle Bonenfant. Bangor’s Chris Howat was among four players who carded a 79.

Alexander, Evan Nadeau, Joey Bartol, Tyler White and Matt Morrow will represent Brewer in the team states while Bangor, which will feature Howat, Thomas Murray, Dakota Williams, Cam Roy and Rye Powell, also qualified along with Brunswick, Edward Little of Auburn, Hampden and Messalonskee of Oakland. Leading Hampden are Mike Skarka, Erik Lee, Matt Meo, Jack Bjorn and Connor Perry.

In Class B, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Belfast, Waterville and Rockland advanced as teams.

Individually, Lincoln Academy’s Malcon Oliver was the low scorer with a 74 while Jamie Jackson of Belfast and Cameron Clement of Rockland both shot 77, followed by Luke Ruffing of Maranacook of Readfield with a 78.

On the girls side, Lincoln Academy’s Kelsey Leeman posted the low round with a 85 while Leavitt of Turner’s Karlee Soracco shot an 87.
