EDWARD ROBERT ‘BOB’ BEGLEY HANCOCK – Edward Robert “Bob” Begley, 92, died Oct. 4, 2010, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Jan. 20, 1918, in Middleboro, Mass., the son of Edward A. and Celia E. (Greaves) Begley. Bob graduated from Middleboro Memorial High School in 1936. He volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1940 as a radio operator, third class. He was assigned to the destroyer, USS Herbert in Key West, Fla. His next assignment was on a new destroyer, the USS Cogswell, built in Bath. The Cogswell joined the Pacific Fleet and took part in many sea battles, ending with the participation in the surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal with one star, Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 10 stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars and the American Area Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rating of chief radio man. Bob married Florence Graham, in 1946. They made their home in Hancock and together opened Maplecrest Nursing Home, Sullivan, in 1951. Florence died in 1972, and he later married the former Donna E. Smith. He worked for F.W. Beal Co. and Dead River Co. for more than 20 years as a television repairman, retiring in 1981 to care for Donna until her death in 1985. In addition to being an avid gardener, Bob’s lifelong hobby was ham radio. He received his FCC ham radio license in 1937 with the call sign, W1KMG. He was a life member of David A. Hooper Lodge No. 201, West Sullivan, member of Union Congregational Church of Hancock and a member of numerous amateur radio clubs. He is survived by two nieces, Joyce Baker Young and husband, Charles, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Gouldsboro, and Constance Baker Kousman of Cornish, N.H.; a great-niece, Shauna Young Marshall and husband, Dennis, of Simsbury, Conn.; a great-great-nephew, Graham Benson Marshall of Simsbury, Conn.; and cousins, Thomas Vacchino and wife, Nancy, of Sangerville, Peter Vacchino of Kingston, Mass., Cindi Vacchino of Plymouth, Mass., Margo Peters and husband, Todd, of East Dennis, Mass., Carol Curtin of Chester, N.H., and Bob Greaves and wife, Debbie. He was predeceased more recently by a special friend and companion, Elizabeth Young of Winter Harbor. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Union Congregational Church of Hancock, with a committal service immediately after at Riverside Cemetery, Hancock.
