FARMINGTON, mAINE — The mother of Maine’s attorney general, state bureau of health director and a state senator has died. Kay Mills of Farmington was 93.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci, whose office confirmed her passing Monday night, described her as “the matriarch of an incredible family.”

Her children include Attorney General Janet Mills; Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Republican state Sen. Peter Mills III. Her other children are Paul Mills, lawyer and historian, and David Mills, also of Farmington.

Mills came from Ashland, where her father was a potato farmer, and moved to Farmington after marrying S. Peter Mills Jr. The Portland Press Herald says she taught English and Latin in several communities.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Kay Mills, who was the proud matriarch of one of Maine’s most influential families. We were truly blessed to know Kay and her late husband, Peter, throughout the years and we treasure the longstanding friendship we had with them, as well as with the entire Mills family,” said Sen. Olympia J. Snowe and former Gov. John R. McKernan Jr.

“Kay Mills was a wonderful woman who devoted her time and energy to many causes, especially education. She inspired her children to achieve great accomplishments, and she instilled in them a great love of public service,” said Sen. Susan Collins.
