Maine VA workers charged with stealing scrap

AUGUSTA, Maine — Two longtime employees of Maine’s Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Togus are out of a job and facing criminal charges that they stole about 1,000 pounds of scrap copper and brass.

Sixty-one-year-old David Gardner of Auburn and 55-year-old Michael Ecker of Vassalboro donated the $2,487 they received for the scrap to the Gulf of Mexico oil cleanup operation through the office of U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

The Portland Press Herald says the two men had intended to tell their superiors of the donation once they had received an acknowledgment from Snowe’s office.

But they first lied to police about what happened. They were charged with misdemeanor theft. Last month they were told they’d lost their jobs.
