PORTLAND, Maine — A new poll says a majority of Mainers are supportive of an upcoming statewide referendum proposing a casino in Oxford County.

In a telephone survey conducted for MaineToday Media, 52 percent of respondents said they would definitely or probably vote in favor of Question 1 on the Nov. 2 ballot seeking approval for a casino with slot machines and table games. Thirty-nine percent said they would definitely or probably vote “no.”

Black Bear Entertainment LLC is proposing a $165 million casino and resort in the town of Oxford.

The poll of 405 registered likely voters was conducted Monday by the Portland-based research firm Critical Insights. It has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.
