Bower leads MMA football team to win; Husson dips to 0-5

CASTINE — Senior fullback Jim Bower ran for 239 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries while leading his Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 61-32 football victory over Worcester State University Saturday afternoon.

The 3-1 Mariners rolled up 635 rushing yards overall on 65 carries for an average of 9.8 yards per carry.

Matt Rende had 164 yards and two TDs on 20 carries for MMA. He also completed three of five passes for another 32 yards. Freshman Bill Wetherbee from John Bapst High had 59 yards and a TD on two carries.

Marcus Price had 147 yards rushing and one TD for the 3-2 Lancers.

Gallaudet 13, Husson 6

At Bangor, the Gallaudet University Bison took a 13-0 lead in the third quarter, but had to hold on for victory despite outrushing Husson 331 yards to 164 overall.

Mike Gimeli gained 148 yards on 18 carries and Jimmy Gardner had 130 yards on 26 carries to pace Gallaudet.

Justin Lindie led Husson with 85 yards on 17 carries.

At Somerville, Mass., senior kicker Gavin Segall-Abrams nailed a 19-yard field attempt with 3:14 left in the game to help Bates College win and snap a 24-year losing streak to Tufts University.
