HARTFORD, Conn. — A recent federal report says Connecticut and Massachusetts are tied for the sixth-highest immunization rate nationwide for children younger than 3 years old.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 76 percent of young children in both states were immunized in 2009 against polio, measles, mumps and other preventable illnesses.

Connecticut and Massachusetts were sixth behind Iowa (78.1 percent), Maryland (77.9), North Dakota (77), North Carolina (76.7) and Michigan (76.5).

Among other New England states, the New Hampshire immunization rate was 73.3 percent; Maine, 72.3; Rhode Island 69.7; and Vermont, 59.9.

The figures come from the CDC’s annual National Immunization Survey, released last month.
