Report: Sheriff pulls teen out of river

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

A distraught 15-year-old Jonesport girl reportedly had to be forcibly retrieved from the cold waters of the Machias River on Thursday afternoon by Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith and Richard Strout of the Machias Police Department.

The girl was the subject of a major search in the Jonesport area on Tuesday and Wednesday after she reportedly ran away from her home, Smith said.

Smith said he found the girl Wednesday afternoon on a Jonesport beach attempting to harm herself and brought her to Down East Community Hospital. Smith said she fled into the river Thursday to avoid a counseling appointment.

Smith reportedly talked the girl out of the water once but she then went back in, at times submerging herself to her neck, as she threw large rocks at the sheriff.

The girl was in the water nearly two hours before she was grabbed by Smith, who said later that he does not know how to swim.

Smith and Strout were assisted at the scene by the Machias Fire and Ambulance Service.
