Collection of students’ Social Security numbers delayed because of data breach

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Education is delaying its collection of student Social Security numbers after a security problem with its database.

The department said Tuesday that it is deleting Social Security numbers while it fixes a data system problem that allowed a school technology director to see restricted information.

State officials told the Kennebec Journal that they immediately found the problem and corrected it, restricting access to staff members’ Social Security information.

The problem occurred as Maine school districts have been collecting students’ Social Security numbers to help the state track student achievement through school, college and the workplace.
