SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A Maine community is considering a plan to make it illegal for people to smoke on municipal beaches.

Smoking is already prohibited at the state beaches in Scarborough. The proposed ordinance would expand the ban to Ferry Point, Pine Point and Higgins beaches.

The town took up the issue at the request of resident Sharman Kivatisky who frequents the beaches with her granddaughters. She says she doesn’t like second hand smoke and cigarette butts litter the beaches.

The Portland Press Herald says the Scarborough Town Council has referred the issue to its ordinance committee.

A number of Maine communities have already banned smoking at municipal beaches.
