Portland police offer text line for tipsters

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Police in Maine’s biggest city are banking on a new Text-A-Tip program to help catch criminals.

Police Chief James Craig says the tip line, which was announced Thursday, will allow people to anonymously send tips about crime.

WMTW reports that the text messages will be routed to a company in Canada, which will encrypt identifying information about the name and cell phone number of the sender to protect their identity.

To send a tip, Portland residents are asked to type “GOTCHA” and the information to 274637.
