Smyrna Mills couple opens fudge business

SMYRNA MILLS, Maine — If your sweet tooth is aching, Bethany Collins of Smyrna Mills may have just the cure.

Collins, along with her husband, Gene, has opened The Fudge Farm at their 126 Smyrna Center Road residence. A grand opening is slated for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with samples available.

She plans to sell chocolate and peanut butter fudge; white, oatmeal and cinnamon swirl bread; miniature apple and cherry pies; giant iced chocolate chip cookies in round or heart shape; cream cheese mints; chocolate, plain, sugar covered and honey-glazed donuts as well as pound, peppermint and shaped cakes. The available cake shapes are a castle, chef’s hat, flower, giant cupcake or T-shirt. Also available are cupcakes and miniature Bundt cakes. All cupcakes and cakes come in white or chocolate.

“I just love to bake, so I thought this was a good excuse for me to do that and make some money, too,” Collins said. “I’m not trying to get rich at this. It’s just something I enjoy doing.”

Breads, pies, cakes and cookies require at least two days’ advance notice.

Collins said she had to file extensive paperwork with the state of Maine to become licensed to run a bakery from her home. Water tests and an inspection of her property were conducted to ensure everything was up to code. That process took several months to complete, she said.

As youth pastors at the Pentecostal Church, the bakery provides an opportunity to provide supplemental income for the Collins family.

The hours of operation are not specific. Collins suggests calling ahead to make sure someone is home.
