PORTLAND, Maine — Comedian Bob Marley says he has broken the world record for the longest standup comedy performance by an individual.

Marley launched his bid Wednesday morning and finished up late Thursday after telling jokes nonstop for 40 hours at the Comedy Connection in Portland, Maine.

The Guinness Book of Records did not immediately certify Marley’s record. The previous record of 38 hours, 6 minutes, was held by Lindsay Webb of Australia.

Oliver Keithly, who is Marley’s manager and the owner of the Comedy Connection, said Marley conformed to Guinness’ rules and had present a timekeeper and two witnesses with no connection to Marley must be present.

There also needed to be at least 10 people in the audience – and awake – at all times.

Marley says he went 18 hours without repeating any material.

He says, “I’ve run marathons before, but this was wild.”

Spectators had to pay to watch Marley perform. Proceeds are going to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center.

Marley says the event raised more than $12,000.
