BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man was arrested Tuesday for throwing rocks at sea gulls in Pickering Square after one of the birds suffered a broken wing and had to be euthanized, police said.

Juan Puig, 21, was charged with cruelty to birds, but those charges may be upgraded before he makes his initial court appearance on Nov. 3, according to police.

Bangor police Officer Jason Stuart responded to Pickering Square in downtown Bangor at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses told Stuart that they observed a group of students throwing potato chips at the birds to lure them close and then trying to kick them. One of the young men, later identified as Puig, reportedly threw a rock at one of the sea gulls, breaking its wing, police said.

The sea gull was reportedly scooped into a box by a bystander. Stuart called a Game Warden to assess the bird’s injuries. At the recommendation of the warden, the officer euthanized the bird at a remote location.

In addition to the charge, Puig was served with a one-year criminal trespass order for Pickering Square.
