PORTLAND, Maine — A 25-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the stabbing of an acquaintance in his apartment this summer.

Shawn Garland entered his plea Wednesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Garland is accused of fatally stabbing 58-year-old Richard Meyers on Aug. 12 in Portland.

Garland has requested a jury trial, which was tentatively scheduled for next September. He is being held in Cumberland County Jail in lieu of bail pending the trial.

Garland’s lawyer has said Garland’s history of mental illness may be used in his defense.
