DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Piscataquis County commissioners are soliciting bids for an architect who would serve in the county’s interest when the state begins its $5 million courtroom renovation project next year.

The commissioners have neither voted to hire an architect nor are there any funds in this year’s budget to do so, but they are investigating the possibility. If they vote to do so, the funds would be added to next year’s budget.

Vicki Wolfetz of Monson, a licensed architect who met with the commissioners Tuesday, had earlier submitted a request to be hired as the county representative for the renovation project. She said as an owner’s representative, she would assure that the project went the way the county expected it to go from design to completion. Without an owner’s representative, the county may be less than pleased with the state’s renovation of the county-owned courthouse, she said Tuesday.

County Manager Marilyn Tourtelotte said Tuesday that Knox County did not have an owner’s representative for its court project, and an official there said it wished it had retained one because of the resulting issues.

While they appreciated Wolfetz’s time, the commissioners agreed that bids should be solicited.

Also on Tuesday:

  • The commissioners reviewed a petition signed by 10 Shirley residents who asked them to intervene on a road matter. The residents want the commissioners to direct Shirley selectmen to make repairs to Blanchard Road. The commissioners agreed to visit the road before they took any action.
  • A contract was awarded to Pike Industries to pave about 1 mile of Elliotsville Road for $95,668, the lowest of two bids submitted for the project, which will be funded through the Unorganized Territory budget.
  • It was reported that the county’s cost for legal work involving Atkinson’s sand and salt pile was $577.50.
