Castle strong as Thomas edges Southern Maine

WATERVILLE — Casey Castle scored both of Thomas College’s goals as the Terriers edged Southern Maine of Gorham 2-1 in men’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon.

Castle’s second goal midway through the second half broke a 1-1 tie for 3-2-2 Thomas.

Nick Johnson scored on a rebound in the second half to tie it for the 1-5 Huskies.

Field hockey

Plymouth State 2, Bates 1

At Lewiston, Jake Sjoberg scored what proved to be the winning goal at 24:16 in the first half to lift Plymouth State past Bates College.

Arhtur Opara added a goal in the first half for 2-3-1 Plymouth State. Dan Salzer made five saves on 15 shots.

Dan Remillard scored an unassisted goal for 1-2-1 Bates. Greg Watts stopped five of 15 shots.

Bowdoin 7, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, Katie Herter knocked in two goals to lead the seventh-ranked Polar Bears past Southern Maine.

Kassey Matoin added a goal for 4-0 Bowdoin. Emily Neilson and Kayla Lessard didn’t face any shots.

Kayla Kennedy saved nine of 20 shots for 3-5 USM.

Women’s soccer

Bates 1, Husson 0

At Lewiston, Riley Kundtz scored in the 27th minute on an assist from Sema Kazarian to lift Bates College by Husson University.

Katie McEnroe stopped eight of 16 shots for the 1-3 Bobcats.

Kristen Capen made eight saves on 22 shots for the 2-3 Eagles.

Colby 0, Bowdoin 0 (2OT)

At Waterville, Colby’s Jayde Bennett picked up her third shutout of the season as Colby and Bowdoin played to a draw.

Bennett compiled four saves on 21 shots for 1-0-3 Colby.

Kat Flaherty stopped three of nine shots for 2-1-1 Bowdoin.

Salem State 1, So. Maine 0

At Gorham, Taylor Orlando scored on a 6-yard header off an assist from Katylyn Verrette with six minutes left in the first half, giving the Vikings the only goal of the contest.

Lauren Garchinsky made two saves on five shots for 3-3-1 Salem State.

Kat Rothe made six saves on 12 shots for 2-6 Southern Maine.
