NEW SHARON, Maine – An 87-year-old man here was killed by a pickup truck Tuesday morning as he was walking across the road in front of his house, according to state police.

The man, Glen Fitch of New Sharon, was struck at around 7:30 am on Route 134 by a truck being driven by Walter Fails, 43, also of New Sharon, police reported.

Fitch, who lived alone, was crossing back to his home after taking his recycling out to the road, when he saw the oncoming truck, apparently tried to turn back but was hit and thrown onto the hood of the pickup, said Trooper Sam Tlumac.

Fails was returning home from working as a correctional officer with the Somerset County Jail, police said, adding that Fails also is a part-time deputy with the Franklin Sheriff’s Office. Fails was not injured.

A team of six troopers investigated the crash, though the cause has not been determined yet. Two factors being looked into was a mistake on the Fitch’s part and possible glare of the morning sun, according to the police report.
