WESTBROOK, Maine — The owner of a southern Maine strip club is prepared to go to court after the club was shut down a day after it opened for business.

Dreamers Cabaret opened Friday in a former warehouse in Westbrook.

Westbrook officials on Saturday ordered it shut down because of fire code violations. Fire Inspector Charles Jarrett shut down the club after citing four violations, including a lack of sprinkler coverage in a hallway, no construction permits from the state Fire Marshal’s Office and no approved fire alarm system. The club’s occupancy permit was revoked on Monday.

Tom Hallett, an attorney representing the club owner, told the Portland Press Herald that officials shut down the club simply because they didn’t like the nature of the business. He said the owner is prepared to go to court if an occupancy permit isn’t reissued.

City Manager Jerre Bryant said the permit was issued based on a proposal for an arcade and a pool hall, not a strip club.
